The great rate debate endures

This year could go down in history as the year of the great rate debate.

At the beginning of 2011, the federal government, bank economists and market watchers were predicting mortgage rates would rise throughout the year.

Rising rates would put at-risk homeowners in the position of not being able to make monthly payments and losing their homes.

The spectre of rising rates caused a warning from the federal government about Canadians’ household debts and led to another tightening of mortgage lending rules.
